Napoleon —
St. Maurice Church in Napoleon will host its first Blood Drive of 2013 from 1 to 6:30 p.m., Feb. 4, at the church, located at 8874 Harrison St., Napoleon.
In a brief interview Thursday afternoon, drive coordinator Arlene Gehl told the Daily News that the church holds two drives a year.
“We hold the first one the first Monday in February and the second on the first Monday in August,” she said. “I always coordinate them.”
As in previous drives, the goal for the Feb. 4 drive is 50 pints.
“If we collect more, we’re very happy,” Gehl said. “And if we get less, we aim to do better next time.”
Actual blood collection will be conducted by personnel Hoxworth Blood Center, with the University of Cincinnati.
“They provide blood products to over 50 hospitals and other medical facilities in Cincinnati and South Eastern Indiana,” Gehl noted. “They supply Margaret Mary in Batesville and the Dearborn County Hospital.”
Gehl has been part of the drive for at least 20 years.
“I started out helping coordinate it when I was a 4-H leader in Napoleon,” she said. “When their participation ended, I started helping through our church.”
“The altruism of people who participate in these drives and donate blood always overwhelms me,” she continued. “People really step up and freely give part of themselves, never knowing to whom their donations will go. And we offer no incentives besides the knowledge that you’re doing something important for your fellow human being. It always kind of reinforces my faith in the inherent good of people.”
