Trash Fire Sparks Criminal Charge For Youth
A bit of late night shenanigans at the Circle K on Lincoln Street in Greensburg catapulted one young man into the Decatur County Jail on charges of arson.
Caleb Moss, 21, 6275 W. County Road 650 N., Osgood, was arrested on charges of arson Friday morning. No bond was set.
According to Police Chief Brian Heaton, the Greensburg Police Department received the report of the fire at the 100 block of N. Lincoln Street early Friday morning. The call was received at 1:23 a.m. Police officers and the crews from the Greensburg Fire Department rushed to the scene to find that a trash bin had been torched and was on fire at the Circle K parking lot.
The trash bin fire was quickly suppressed by the fire department, while officers began their search for the alleged culprits. According to Heaton, Caleb Moss was quickly identified, along with two other others who were not arrested. Heaton noted that the investigation is ongoing, but essentially complete. Some details still need to be worked out, he said.
Nothing was inside the trash bin except garbage, and no injuries were reported. There was also no serious damage reported other than the scorched garbage receptacle.
Heaton credited the quick apprehension of the alleged arsonist and the hasty suppression of the fire to the quick actions of the local fire and police departments.
“The guys did a terrific job,” Heaton said.
The charge of arson can be either a Class B felony or a Class D felony, depending on the extent of the damage. A conviction on a Class B felony can result in a fine of up to $10,000 and up to 20 years in jail. A conviction on a Class D felony can result in a fine of up to $10,000 and up to 3 years in jail.
