Greensburg —
The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department responded to an accident involving serious bodily injury on State Route 3 North near County Road 500 North at 5:42 p.m. Sunday.
The Sheriff’s Department received a report of a vehicle which had lost control and left the roadway, striking a utility pole. Deputies Robert Goodfellow and Dave Henderson found a 13-year-old female in the rear passenger seat behind the driver, unconscious and trapped in the vehicle on the east side of State Road 3. The driver, Devin C. Lark, 19, and another female passenger, age 14, were able to exit the vehicle. All parties involved were wearing seat belts. The individuals involved in the crash reside in the North Vernon area.
The 13-year-old female was transported to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis by Lifeline helicopter from the scene. Lark and the other female juvenile were transported to Decatur County Memorial Hospital Emergency Room by Decatur County EMS, where they were treated and released for minor injuries sustained during the accident.
Deputies investigating the accident found that Lark was operating a 2002 Jeep Liberty southbound on State Route 3. Lark stated that he and his two passengers were southbound on State Route 3 and attempted to pass another vehicle.
During this action, Lark lost control of the vehicle, sliding sideways into the ditch on the east side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a utility pole on the left rear passenger’s door, where the 13-year-old passenger was seated.
The accident remains under investigation as toxicology results will take four to six weeks to complete. Speed and road conditions are believed to be the contributing factors in the accident.
Agencies responding to the scene included Decatur County EMS, Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Department, Greensburg Fire Department and Decatur County Sheriff’s Department.
