A handful of Decatur County REMC electric customers experienced a roughly hour-long power outage Monday afternoon due to a blown fuse in one of the company’s power boxes.
Tammie Spurlock, REMC corporate relations manager, told the Daily News that the first report about an outage was received around 4:18 p.m. The problem was resolved and power restored by around 5:20, Spurlock said. About five homes were affected.
Spurlock added that, without extensive investigation, there was no way to precisely pinpoint why the fuse blew.
She speculated, however, that, with extremely low temperatures plaguing Decatur County on Monday, people might tend to turn the heat up a little more than normal, leading, potentially, to an overload.
The problem might well have lain with the fuse itself, though, Spurlock pointed out.
Fuses get old and wear out, she said, much the same as any other type of equipment.
Whatever the ultimate reason for the blown fuse, Spurlock was confident the problem was fully resolved, without any indication of further trouble.
In the event of a power failure, Spurlock encouraged Decatur County REMC customers to call 663-3391, 24-hours-a-day, to report the outage.
