Greensburg —
Ponderosa Steakhouse and MDL Coffee & Tea Company will offer free food for Veteran’s Day to servicemen and women who stop by.
MDL Coffee & Tea Company will offer a free cup of coffee or tea for any Veteran or active-duty serviceman or woman who requests their hot beverage. The offer will be from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday (today).
“We want to pay tribute to our Veterans,” said Dr. Michael Layne, owner of MDL.
Ponderosa Steakhouse will offer a free buffet and drink from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 12. The offer is open to any Veteran or active-duty serviceman or woman.
“I want as many people as I can get,” said Ponderosa Manager Tina Marshall. “They work hard for us; they risk their lives for us, and it’s the least we can do.”
2012 marks the third year Ponderosa has offered the Veteran’s Day meal. Marshall said turnout has been decent in the past, with last year attracting 425 servicemen and women, with members of the Army being the most frequently seen. The meal is open to all branches of service - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard.
Many of the veterans who come like to share their stories, said Marshall, providing an opportunity to meet a lot of interesting people.
Any Veteran who wants to bring a picture for Ponderosa to put on display is welcome, mentioned Marshall. The photos are another interesting way to show the evolution of military uniforms. There will also be a paper flag for Veterans and active-duty customers to sign.
Marshall said she made the mistake last year of using a real flag for Veterans to sign, not knowing the signatures were considered a desecration of the flag. She didn’t make the same mistake this year though, and hopes to have a good memento for 2012 Veteran’s Day.
Marshall has also called local nursing homes to encourage the homes to bring their veterans for lunch. Lunchtime would be the best time to arrive, said Marshall. Ponderosa is not as busy during lunch, so there will be plenty of room for anyone in a wheelchair.
