GREENSBURG - The basketball court may have its boundaries but unfortunately cancer knows none.
The coaches at North Decatur recognized that fact recently by raising money through its “Coaches for Cancer” program. As a result, they presented a $500 check to the Decatur County Memorial Hospital (DCMH) Oncology Department on Thursday.
Chargers Varsity Coach Kyle Nobbe shared that the efforts culminated with the North Decatur versus Hauser game on Friday, Jan. 8. However, the results were bolstered by a week of fundraising activities at the school leading up to the event. Students participated in the “wear a hat” day, a jeans day and even a shooting competition at lunch time. All were designed to not only raise funds, but to raise awareness of the challenges facing the disease and the search for a cure.
The efforts did not stop when the game started. During the game, cheerleaders passed the change bucket for additional collections. To add to the fun they threw out mini Charger/DCMH basketballs to the crowd during the game.
While the Chargers ended up winning the game over Hauser 60-58, the oncology department at DCMH came out the real winner for the evening. According to Cindy Daihl, RN, OCN and Oncology Department Manager the donation was much appreciated.
“We really cannot thank the students and coaches at North Decatur enough for their caring and compassion,” Daihl said. “Efforts like these are so important to our community, our hospital and our patients.”
Daihl noted it also helps to raise awareness of the DCMH services. The oncology program at Decatur County Memorial Hospital has been recognized by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons - the national gold standard in cancer care. This prestigious stamp of approval demonstrates an elevated level of care in diagnosis, treatment, screening and community outreach.
