Greensburg —
Elementary and junior high students from across the county gathered at the Greensburg Public Library Saturday to compete in Battle of the Books.
Teams of 5-7 students at each school were responsible to read 10 books chosen by a committee at the library, Jill Pratt, Children's Librarian, explained. The idea was originally inspired by similar programs at other libraries and has become a fun competition for area youths, she continued. Through competition and fun, the event hopes to open kids up to new kinds of books in a variety of genres.
The committee is made up of individuals with varying tastes, and the process involves ready a large number of books, Pratt noted. In the end, teams determine whether everyone will read all 10 books or whether to divide them up. Regardless the strategy, the students take the event seriously and have fun in the process, hopefully fostering a desire to continue reading all year.
ÒReading is something you can enjoy throughout your entire life," Pratt said.
Morning competition included fifth and sixth grade students from Greensburg, North Decatur, South Decatur and St. Mary's. In the afternoon, competition involved seventh and eighth graders from Greensburg, North Decatur and South Decatur. Each session was broken into three rounds.
For the younger group, the highest score in the first round was 19, earned by St. Mary's #2. In the second round, South Decatur #2 and St. Mary's #2 tied with 18 points each.
