Greensburg —
State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) may not be spending her days at the Statehouse during the summer recess, but she remains busy staying in touch with her neighbors in the district.
At an open house at Cottonwood Lake (located on Co. Rd. 500 S. west of Co. Rd. 60 Sw.), she noted that each week includes many evening events as well as at least one full day of appointments. That day, she explained, she had begun by sharing breakfast with the National Association of Retired Federal Employees before spending a few hours at WorkOne in Greensburg. The afternoon open house was the third of her engagements, she noted as she headed to a meeting with the Superintendent of the Batesville Community School Corporation.
Leising noted that as she works through the summer, she is looking toward a hard legislative session ahead. With funding continuing to be tight, there will be difficult cuts to make in order to keep a balanced budget.
"It's like any household," she noted, "when you start tightening your belt, you can do away with things you don't notice. When you have to do it again, it gets hard."
While visitors to the open house had an opportunity to hear from Leising, they also had the chance to experience Cottonwood Lake itself. The open house included hamburgers, hot dogs, cole slaw and baked beans from Beck's Grillin' & Catering as well as a ride around the 30-acre lake. The lake was created with the construction of a dam in 2003, designed and approved by the Department of Natural Resources. The 65-foot-deep body of water is clear without the use of any chemicals. Grass carp work to clear bottom growth with the depth itself providing conditions that prevent growth at the surface, one of the owners, Keith Reed, explained.
Reed, Loren Briggs and Larry Colson purchased the 150 acres on which the lake sits, developing the ground as a 33-lot residential area. Thus far, nine of the lots have been sold and seven homes built. For lifelong Decatur County residents Reed, Briggs and Colson, the area was a perfect site for the construction of their dream homes.
"We wanted a place away from the hustle of everyday modern life, with deer, turkey and other wildlife as our neighbors," they stated in a letter on the website for the property.
