Matt White knows how to bring diversity to Decatur County, moving here from other states and countries. White was born at the Eglin Air Force Base in Florida to Larry and Donna. Larry White was a Tech. Sergeant in the Air Force, so the family moved depending on where he was stationed. At the age of two, he and his parents, sisters Rachael and Erika and brother Zach moved to Germany. White lived in Germany for four years before moving to North Carolina. After two years in North Carolina, the Whites finally settled down in Lake Santee.
White is a junior at North Decatur High School. He was recently in the musical, Anything Goes. He thought it was a fun experience even though it was upsetting when he had to cut his hair. Luckily, his hair has grown back for the most part. White is also in ND Singers for the
first time this year. He loves being in choir.
He thinks Mr. Borns is a great teacher and he has made several new friends. However, the part
of ND Singers White likes the best is their plan to travel to New York City in late March.
“It’s going to be exciting, fun and amazing. I'm going to take in every moment and hope its not my last,” White said about going to New York for four days.
White is especially enthusiastic about New York because he hopes to live in Manhattan someday. He wants to be a photographer for Vogue and meet people such as English model Twiggy, artist/photographer Mickey Smith and Gilles Bensimon, one of the first photographers to shoot
Tyra Banks.
White began his passion for photography when he turned 14 and received his first camera. He entered the Lake Santee photography contest and hasn’t stopped taking photos ever since. He won an online model contest on Bebo, getting his photos credited, but he claims it was no
big deal.
“In photography, you have complete control. Nobody can tell you what to do. If you like it, you keep it. If not, just delete it. I like showing the world what I see,” White described what is so great about photography.
New York also has a special connection to White and his dedication to taking photos for another reason. A friend of White’s at North Decatur has an aunt who knows a set director of a television show in NY. This set director does other jobs on the side that could benefit from White. White took photos of his friend and sent them to New York. The photos earned White a phone call over the summer, and who knows where it will take him from here.
White also enjoys attempting to express his creativity through poetry.
“I like hanging with my sister, Erika, who is an awesome tattoo artist and I am trained in the ancient art of awesome,” White jokes of his favorite activities.
White has three tattoos done by his sister. His right wrist displays a bright green squirrel from Happy Tree Friends and his index fingers each have a teardrop that he can hold up to his face when someone is sad. He also has three piercings. White has metal in his septum, tongue, and as of a few days ago, his right ear has an industrial. He had his lip pierced in the past.
