Legion Recognizes Service Workers Of The Year

Greensburg — The American Legion presented plaques to Matt Stone, Decatur County EMS of the Year; David Henderson, Decatur County Sheriff Deputy of the Year; Charles Gunter, Greensburg Fire Fighter of the Year and Fred Huser, Greensburg Police Officer of the Year.

The awards were presented Monday at the American Legion. Before the presentation of the plaques, the Legion provided dinner for the honorees, their families, and those who nominated the them.

Afterward, Teresa Wise, Director of Decatur County EMS, introduced Matt Stone, her choice for Decatur County EMS of the Year.

"Matt has a good attitude," Wise said. "He's always looking for something more to do."

Wise said choosing a person was not easy because Decatur County EMS operates as a team. Wise went on to say that Stone is new to EMS. However he is not new to service, as he has also been a volunteer firefighter.

Next, David Henderson was presented as Decatur County Sheriff Deputy of the Year by Don Bultman of the American Legion.

"I've known Dave Henderson a while," Bultman said. "I really appreciate what he's done for us."

Bultman said that on top of working for the DCSD, Henderson also helps the Legion during funeral services. Henderson thanked the Legion for its recognition.

Fire Chief Scott Chasteen presented his choice for Greensburg Fire Fighter of the Year, Charles Gunter.

"Chuck has really taken the bull by the horns," Chasteen said. "Because of him, the people (of the community) will be well protected in the future."

Chasteen said Gunter has been with the GFD for two and a half years, but he has worked as a firefighter for 17 years, working for fire departments in Holton and Versailles. Chasteen went on to say that Gunter is also an EMT and a fire instructor. Chasteen mentioned that Gunter was the one who organized the fire-training exercise that took place at the Honda Plant last month.

"Chuck took it upon himself to put that together," he said. "It's that kind of work that makes him a good choice."

Gunter was joined by his parents and his wife, Rebecca, who works as a dispatcher in Batesville. Gunter expressed his appreciation to the Legion, his parents and his wife for their support. He said he was honored by the award. Next, Brian Heaton presented Fred Huser as GPD Officer of the Year.

"(Fred Huser) has been a mentor to me and a father-like figure," Heaton said. "He's a very humble man, and he's professional and reliable."

Heaton said Huser has been with the GPD for 35 years. Prior to working for the department, Huser served in the Army and in Vietnam. Huser said when he retires, he hopes to join the Legion as well. Huser expressed his appreciation for the award.
