Greensburg — Ed Mauer, 98, is one of the Daily News’ longest standing subscribers and customers.

Born Jan. 22, 1915 in St. Morris to Josephine and Jacob Mauer, Ed’s family has likely held a Daily News subscription since somewhere between 1938 and 1941.

In the many years since his family began receiving the Daily News, Ed Mauer has lived a long, full and exceptionally busy life.

Ed’s father passed away of pneumonia on New Year’s day when Ed was between eight or 10 years of age. Ed would finish elementary school, but never entered high school in order to help his family on the farm. He used whatever money was earned to help support his family.

Ed went on to work at what would become known as Reed and Lynch One Stop Service, where he recalls having to sell people patched-up tires because tires were rationed during World War II.

Ed also worked as a mail carrier for many years, and for at least 25 years owned the Sinclair Station, a filling station, until he retired. Ed said he has delivered for Meals on Wheels, and has worked as a maintenance man in addition to his many other vocations in the Decatur County community.

In 1951 Ed moved from St. Morris to Greensburg with his mother and two sisters. He is a member of St. Mary’s, and he never married.

Ed’s nephew, Mike Mauer, said that Ed once kept chickens and a garden, and that his uncle had made a hobby of going to Keillor’s for a cup of coffee and to “talk with the guys.”

Mike said that many people still remember Ed from his coffee and visiting days.

Ed also used to travel to Florida for vacation and to fish, and to pay for the vacation he would help fruit farmers repair crates.
