Those wanting a trip to a “Winter Wonderland” are invited to visit the Historical Society of Decatur County museum on Sunday.
Six musical acts will fill the open house event from 1 to 4 p.m. as visitors have the option to visit with Santa Clause or mail him letters to receive a response from the North Pole, volunteer Lois Carol McCormack explained. Tasty treats will include homemade tapioca pudding as well as cookies and punch, and the museum will be decked out in its traditional Christmas style.
Before the museum opens for its Sunday event, young artists from South Decatur Elementary had a chance to see their work on the Christmas tree donated by Bohman’s Tree Farm. The fourth-graders from South made ornaments in the shape of gloves to festoon the tree, and 94 of the students traveled to the museum on Friday to see their work and tour the facility.
On the lawn of the museum sits a farm sleigh donated to the organization by the Shelhorn family, who will be visiting the refurbished historical item on Sunday.
In addition to the holiday activities, visitors will also have the opportunity to peruse 50 years of Barbie history. Dolls representing the legacy of the iconic figure fill the upstairs of the museum along with a wide variety of accessories. From Cinderella Barbie to a collection of Military Barbies, the collection amassed through the effort of museum volunteers like Helen Hamilton pays tribute to the doll’s legacy, which began in 1959.
The event will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday and continue until 4 p.m. The museum is located on North Franklin Street across from the Post Office.
