With winter making its frosty presence felt in the area, weekend revelers will find a warm respite Saturday while helping to bring Christmas to underprivileged children across the county.
Skeeter McGee and Alternative School will be hosting a benefit concert Saturday night at the Knights of Columbus. The doors open at 7 and the first act, Alternative School, hits the stage at 8. Skeeter McGee with special guest Hayley Schwering will rock the crowd from 9 until midnight. Tickets for the event are $20 per couple and include two drinks from the bar, provided by the Knights of Columbus.
Skeeter McGee drummer Bryan Messer said he and the band were looking for a way to help this season decided to do what they do best.
“We thought it would be a good idea to raise money for Cheer Fund. It seems to be a little slow this year,” Messer said.
So far, only a little more than $10,000 has been raised of the $40,000 goal. About 349 applications have been received and the money raised will determine the quality of the season.
Messer said he was willing to do whatever it takes to help bring the funds in for those in need. In addition to playing the concert, Skeeter McGee will be giving away 100 of their albums. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and several other raffle items, such as a 40-inch plasma screen TV with wall mount. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Knights of Columbus.
Guests are also asked to bring a new toy, children’s clothes item or canned food. Messer also wants people to rock out.
Local favorites, Alternative School and Skeeter McGee play different styles of rock. Alternative School boasts a modern rock sound while Skeeter McGee dabbles in acoustic-tinged power pop. Messer said they might even throw a few Christmas songs into the set list.
“People can expect a good time, good music and they’ll be helping out a good cause,” Messer said.
