‘Tis the season to give thanks and that is what South Decatur High School computer teacher Kelly Fox did when McDonald’s Restaurants of Central Indiana awarded her a Make Activities Count (MAC) grant on Monday, Nov. 23.
Shelley Williams, Sheila Leising and Christie Nobbe, representatives for the Central Indiana McDonald’s Restaurants, presented a $498 check to Fox to use for a hands-on computer project.
“The project focuses on middle school students (grades 6 through 8) and must be a hands-on project,” said Fox.
Fox’s money will be spent purchasing an unassembled computer kit. Her students will then be given hands-on training in assembling the computer.
“Moms and Dads don’t usually want their kids to tear apart their home computers,” said Fox about the inspiration for her project. “This project allows my students to understand a little better how a computer works.”
Of course, she make sure her students don’t do any homework on their personl stuff.
“I’ll be sure to tell the kids, ‘Don’t try this at home!’” she added, laughing,
Fox’s MAC grant is one of the 33 that were awarded by the Central Indiana McDonald’s Restaurants this year according to Leising. This is South Decatur’s second MAC grant and, according to Nobbe, is a grant specifically geared to middle schools in Central Indiana and awarded by the owners and operators of the local McDonald’s.
