Trudy Lewis has lived in St. Paul her entire life.
She attended St. Paul High School, where she met her husband, Charles. He owned Charlie’s Corner gas station and hardware store in St. Paul for 30 years.
“Charles and I were born and raised here. I guess we don’t have the sense to get out of St. Paul,” Lewis joked.
They have two grown sons, Tony and Todd. They also have a step grandson and two granddaughters. One granddaughter is going to Disney World in Florida for personal relations while the other is a student at the University of Indianapolis studying to be a band director.
Lewis is the Director of the Mealsite for the St. Paul senior citizens. She works for the Aging and Community Service in Columbus. Her job is to get frozen meals from Chef for Hire once a week. All the meals have nutritional values included. She heats meals daily for the six to 10 senior citizens who come to the civic center for lunch. Lewis sets the tables and makes sure everything runs smoothly for them before personally delivering meals to her two homebound recipients.
The civic center in St. Paul is open to anyone over the age of 60 every Monday through Friday for lunch. A $2 donation is asked for each meal. After lunch, most senior citizens stay for euchre. Reading materials are donated from Greensburg and Shelbyville. A jigsaw puzzle is always on a table to work on and they even have a Nintendo Wii. They have been practicing bowling on the Wii in hopes of a tournament against the Waldron rehabilitation center.
Once a month, people from the Waldron rehabilitation center come to check everyone’s blood pressure. Every first and third Wednesday of the month, Lewis has bingo for her lunch crowd. The St. Paul senior citizens are looking forward to traveling to High Point Orchard on Oct. 29. Next month, a road trip will take them to the Red Brick, a family dining place in Penntown. A local man, Rick Hasecuster, plays the organ at the Red Brick. The town of St. Paul recently added a handicapped ramp at the civic center. They plan to add an awning and redecorate the inside soon.
Lewis is also the Secretary of the St. Paul Kiwanis. She enjoys playing bingo at American Legion in Shelbyville on Sunday afternoons, especially when they have cash prizes.
Still it’s caring for her hometown and her neighbors that makes life in St. Paul a little sweeter than anywhere else.
“My favorite part of what I do at the civic center is greeting people who are all so friendly. Everyone who comes has different stories to tell,” Lewis commented.
