Young Pirate On Path To Diplomacy

Greensburg Community High School sophomore Jared Rueff, son of Fritz and Wendy Rueff, will soon embark on a trip focused on national security and diplomacy.

After doing well on a test during his freshman year, Rueff explained, he was selected to be part of the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security: Exploring American Diplomacy, Intelligence and Defense. The program, he explained, offers students a chance to see potential careers and receive information on how to prepare for them.

For Rueff, who is interested in careers with the CIA or as a diplomat, this year’s forum proved a perfect fit, and his nomination by the National Research Center for College and University Admissions is something for which he is very grateful.

Throughout the summer, Rueff, 15, worked on his family’s farm to raise funds for the trip. He ground feed, fed hogs, washed out hog buildings and performed maintenance, he explained.

Rueff feels well-prepared for the Forum due to his participation in the Junior Optimist Club as well as the Greensburg Pirates basketball program. Through the Optimist Club, he has learned to help members of his community, he said. Through basketball, he has learned to be part of a team and mediate disagreements while also accomplishing his own goals.

Rueff will be departing for Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Oct. 20 and will return on Oct. 25. His journey will include other students from around the country who he will meet upon his arrival.

While there, he will be challenged with question and answer sessions with civilian policy makers and senior military. He will also have the opportunity to visit places such as the U.S. Department of State, the Defense Intelligence Agency and a variety of other sights that will offer education on diplomicy, international affairs and military strategy.

“Imagine being 16 or 17 years old and the responsibility of securing the United States at home and abroad rests on your shoulders. Through specialized simulations, the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) on National Security strives to put students in the driver’s seat of building a strategy that will uphold our national security,” said Marguerite Regan, Dean of Academic Affairs for NYLF in a press release. “The combination of interacting with professionals and with other students in this setting ensures that leaders are being developed so the future of our country will remain very bright.”

For Rueff, the program itself is less daunting than the airplane travel required to get there.

“I’m really pumped,” he said of the Forum.

When Rueff returns to Greensburg, he will be amongst more than 50,000 students who have participated in NYLF programs, which are held in 11 U.S. cities in a variety of career fields.
