Greensburg —
An event designed to raise money for the Decatur County Family YMCA's Invest in Youth Scholarship program will give riders a chance to bike for a cause this weekend.
According to the Y's Fitness and Group Exercise Director Deena Hamer, on Saturday, Aug, 28, riders will begin their trek at 9 a.m., after gathering at the back of the Greensburg Elementary School for the Decatur County Family YMCA's Second Annual 'Bike for Youth' rides. Bike for Youth is a non-competitive ride raising money to provide scholarships for kids and families in and around the Decatur County community. The small registration fee will help provide financial assistance to children and families that may not otherwise be able to participate in programs and activities at the Y.
The Y focuses on developing valuable skills, helping children gain confidence and build self-esteem while learning important values such as caring, honesty, responsibility and respect. All registration fees go to our "Invest in Youth" Scholarship Program. There are three different rides that individuals and families can choose from.
The first ride, starting at 9 a.m., is a 31-mile ride going out to Lake Santee, around the Lake and back to the school. There are signs and arrows marking the course and will be a water station at the entrance of the Lake. The second ride, starting at 9:10 a.m., is about half the distance, or 13 miles. This ride will head down County Road NE 80 to County Road 600 E., turning right, traveling to Base Road. After a right turn, riders will proceed back to NE 80 and back to the school. The last ride, starting at 9:15 a.m., travels down and left to the four-way stop at GECOM, turning left on Montgomery Road to Davison, then left on Davison to Central Avenue. Then left on Big Blue Avenue to Lehman Way and back to the school.
"This ride is a great way to give back to the community, while spending quality time getting exercising with your family," Hamer explained.
Those interested may register at the Y, online or the day of, which will begin at 8:30 a.m. Registration fees are $10 for adults if they register by Wednesday, Aug. 25. After Aug. 25, it will be $15. Kids pre-school through 18-years-old is $5, and infant to kindergarten is $3. There will be water and snacks provided, sponsored by Health Centered Spine and Wellness.
