Late breaking news from the office of Gov. Mitch Daniels may mean a windfall for either Decatur of Ripley county.
Daniels personally phoned the offices of publisher Mike Casuscelli just before 4 p.m. Monday and followed up with this announcement.
“I have notified mayors and local officials in Decatur and Ripley counties that the state is working with a well-known company that is considering their communities for a major expansion of its operations,” Daniels said. “In jobs and capital investment, the project has excellent potential for Indiana.”
Greensburg Mayor Frank Manus was elated with the announcement.
“Governor Daniels called me today and I was absolutely happy to hear about this,” Manus said. “It’s not often you get a call from the Governor and it’s even better when he reaches out with good news. This sounds like a very big deal. He couldn’t say much, but I was quite pleased with what I heard.”
Daniels also said the as yet un-named company has already started contacting property owners in the area who currently hold land desired by the firm. This is not an eminent domain issue but rather preliminary inquiry into the availability of land for sale. Those property owners should have received a FEDEX letter by now.
Residents who received the letter were contacted by the Greensburg Daily News. The proposed site seems to be centered on the County Road 700 East area off of State Road 46 near New Point. The letter promised a possible purchase of their property at a sizable profit margin for the property owner. It also intimated the company could bring as many as 700 jobs.
Those with the letters were invited to a meeting at the Knights of Columbus, in Greensburg, on Thursday. A “simultaneous” meeting is being arranged in both counties with the one in Ripley County slated to be held at the Sherman House in Batesville.
Even though the possible investment would be in the county, Manus still sees it as a huge positive.
“We’ll take development wherever we can get it,” he said. “Whatever we can do to help, we will.”
Daniels also talked about the opportunity for the county and Indiana as a whole.
“Indiana is a leading contender for this investment, but the ability to assemble a site rapidly will be the critical factor,” he said. “For obvious business reasons, the identity of the potential investor and many other specifics cannot be disclosed for now, but I can confirm that this possibility is real and represents a remarkable opportunity for our state.”
