Glee Club brings new world to local students

Greensburg — Local students from throughout Decatur County get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on Friday, Nov. 16, when they perform two numbers with the Miami University Glee Club (MUGC).

Not only will it provide the perspective of performing with a highly accomplished group, the opportunity should also offer a glimpse of the dedication and professionalism it requires behind the scenes.

According to David Fry, co-chair of the Glee Club performance, “When we first approached the Miami University Glee Club about involving local students, they were thrilled. MUGC Director, Dr. Jeremy Jones, agreed without hesitation to enable the local students to enjoy this unique experience.”

Fry added that the young men from Decatur County will have just one rehearsal with the group late Friday afternoon, which can present unique challenges for both groups.

Approximately 20 male students from the show choirs throughout Decatur County will attend and participate. “To make this special effort to involve local youth was a natural extension of that portion of the Art and Cultural Council’s mission surrounding ‘education, exposure, and participation,” Fry said.

The Miami University Men’s Glee Club is one of the oldest and largest in the country. A world renowned group, they’ve performed more than ten times in Europe and, in 2008, performed at the pre-Olympic festival in China. In addition, they’ve received numerous other accolades and have performed in unique locations such as the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. They’ve also performed in Russia, Estonia, Finland, Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe and with a number of symphony orchestras.

The Glee Club performance begins at 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 16, in the Greensburg Junior High School auditorium. Exterior doors open at 6 p.m., with the Auditorium doors slated to open at 6:30. Tickets are available in advance for $9 until noon Friday, Nov. 16, at the Art on the Square Gallery and at the Greensburg Public Library. Tickets are $12 at the door. For the first time, a discounted, $5 student ticket is available for those with school I.D.s. Premium tickets, which afford preferred seating, are also available at Art on the Square for $25 each.
