The baseball team finished the season 15-12-1 and tied for first place with the Lawrenceburg Tigers in EIAC (Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference) play. They advanced to the final game of Sectional 28 before being eliminated by the Madison Cubs.
The returning players from last year’s team that made a semi-state run acquitted themselves well. Almost from day one, the absence of last year’s big bats made hitting a little tougher this year. And the absence of Mr. Baseball, Alex Meyer, in the center of the diamond put pressure on the team’s pitching staff.
Still seniors Chris Blankman, Chris Denton, Brok Hersley, Nick Springmeyer, Aaron Hoeing and Jacob Powers provided the leadership, bats and arms to give the Pirates a plus 500 season with Blankman leading the way among the senior class.
The track team also had its heroes. Craig Schwipps, Curtis Nieman, Elijah Harter, Mitch Tuttle and Matt Smart all qualified for regional competition and provided the scoring the Pirates needed for dual and triangular meet competition.
Schwipps ran the hurdles and the 4X100 and 4x400 relays and Nieman ran the 800-meter run and the 4X400 and 4X800 relays, Tuttle won the high jump at the East Central sectional and ran the sprint relay. Harter had the second-best finish at sectional with a second in the shot. He also ran the 4X100 relay. Smart qualified in both the shot put and discus.
The following week at Connersville, Harter picked up an additional two feet on his best throw to garner sixth place while Smart added nearly 11 feet on his best discus throw to claim fifth place for the Pirates.
One other harrier to mention is freshman Lance Hunter who vaulted 13 feet, one of the best marks in the state for his class.
In golf, the Pirates experienced a great deal of success including an easy victory in the EIAC tournament, a triumph over Columbus North in a dual meet, victory in the county tournament and a successful dual meet season.
At the EIAC meet, the Pirates had four of the five members of the team garner All-Conference recognition led by the Pirates’ No. 1 ace Robbi Koors.
The next weekend, the Pirates took second to Columbus North at the sectional held at the Greensburg Country Club and qualified for the regional meet at Shadowood Golf Course on Seymour’s east side. Koors was again medalist.
Besides Koors, the squad that participated at the EIAC, sectional and regional squads consisted of Quentin Wells, Scott Hadler, Jeremy Mormon and Logan Barker.
The biggest news out of the regional was that Koors qualified for the state meet with an even-par 72. He failed to gain medalist honors at Shadowood by two strokes as he was defeated by Bedford North Lawrence’s No. 2 golfer Chase Wagner who shot 37-33 -- 70 while Koors was 37-35 -- 72. It was only the second time in 18 tries that Koors did not earn medalist honors.
Last Tuesday at the Legends of Golf Course in Franklin, Ind., Koors shot a three over par 75 that placed him in a quintet of the best scholastic golfers in Indiana who failed to make the cut for the final day of competition by a single stroke. Rules call for the top nine individuals, excluding those individuals who advance with a team to advance to the championship round and the ninth score was 74. Unfortunately for Koors, his score was a shot over the cut-off.
The irony of his missing the cut was that he trailed eventual champion Adam Sumrall by a single stroke in round one of the tournament.
Still, his advance to the threshold of the championship round and his overall season’s play has earned Koors All-State honors.
Because of that honor and for his play, the Daily News is proud to name Robbi Koors the Male Athlete of the Spring for Greensburg.
