The Candlelighters Club
The Candlelighters Club met at Ponderosa for their birthday party on April 11 with four members.
All the members enjoyed their meals and being together.
The next meeting will be at Helen Wasson’s home with hostess, Irene Dwiggins on May 9 at 1 p.m.
Kitchen Kookies Home Extension Club
The Kitchen Kookies Home Extension Club met for their April meeting at the home of Susan Reasoner with nine members and two guests attending.
Alice Woodhull, president, opened the meeting by having all to repeat the club creed and the pledge to the flag.
Benefits from the 23rd Psalm were the devotions given by the hostess.
The thought of the month was read by Helen Parker and she lead us in singing “Do Lord.”
The roll call was “name your favorite flower and there were lots of different answers, but most agreed they are all beautiful.
A report was given on District Day held at Dearborn County with nine members attending from Decatur County. Four club members from our club attended International Night at El Reparo with the speaker telling about Mexico. They reported a large attendance, good food, and lots of fun.
July 25, the club will go to the Last Supper Museum to view the different items depicting the Lord’s Supper.
The nominating committee submitted the state of officers for 2007-2008. President, Susan Reasoner; Vice President, Carol Smiley; Secretary and Treasurer, Polly McCreary.
It was voted our dues must be paid at the May meeting. Reba Thompson gave the health and safety lesson on self-tanning.
Barbara Smiley led cultural arts on, “The Out House.”
Our guest was Tammy Wenning and Jin Kyaung Hong of South Korea. Jin is a foreign exchange student attending South Decatur High School and living with her host family, The Wenning’s.
She was dressed in a beautiful costume they use for special occasions. She told of her family, homeland and schools. She spoke very fluent English and understood the questions that were asked. She fixed green tea for our club members and we each had a piece of pumpkin candy. She arrived in U.S. in August and will be returning home in May. Her favorite thing to do in the U.S. is shop.
The meeting was closed with the club prayer.
Patsy Hitchel won the lucky napkin prize and Polly the contest.
The next meeting will be on May 2 at the home of Erma Moore with Carol Smiley as hostess.
The lesson will be given by Polly on Garage Sales.
St. Maurice Extension Homemakers
The April 3 meeting of the St. Maurice Extension Homemakers was held at the home of Evelyn Kramer. Evelyn presided at the meeting. It was opened by everyone saying the “Hail Mary”. All recited the pledge to the flag and the club creed.
Rosie Wenning read the thought of the month. There were no birthdays or anniversary’s this month. The group sang, “Here Comes Peter Cottontail.” Roll call was answered by five members with the name of their favorite flower. The flowers that were mentioned were roses, daylily, dahlia and hydrangea. The secretary and treasurer’s reports were read by Elaine Nobbe in the absence of the other officers.
There was an election of officers for this coming year. They are as follows: President, Elaine Nobbe; Vice President, Rita Hellmich; Secretary and reporter, Eileen Fisse; Treasurer, Jamie Nobbe; Health and Safety Leader, Esther Wallpe and Song Leader Rosie Wenning.
Evelyn reported on council meeting. Marilyn Davis asked if our club and the Country Chums would do International Night next year, and we were also going to help the Night Club set up a display at the fair promoting Extension Homemakers. Our club dues will be collected at the May meeting.
There was a discussion of how to get more members to join the club or even joining with another club. The lessons for next meeting were discussed. Rita also mentioned the group coming up with our own lessons.
Rosie thanked the club for the flower sent to her during her recent surgery. Elaine also thanked the club for the sympathy card.
Several are planning to attend International Night and also take some cultural arts items. Rosie has made 125 preemie gowns for Riley Hospital.
The meeting was closed with the singing of the club prayer and Rita gave the lesson Simple Streamline sewing. Easter table setting; Placements, Easter Bunny; napkins, carrot shape; table favors, peeps; coasters, egg shaped; center piece, rabbit with basket; candy favor, rabbit head on a jar. She also showed two different wall hangings. She also talked about paper piecing as a future demo.
Evelyn served delicious dessert. For cultural arts she showed maple leaf pillowcases she made for the church picnic and a T-shirt quilt being made for her grandson.
The next meeting will be on May 3 at 7 p.m. at the home of Esther Wallpe. We will have a plant exchange.
St. Maurice Parish Council Catholic Women
The St. Maurice Parish Council Catholic Women met on April 12 in parish hall with Barb O’Dell, president, opening the meeting. The six ladies present recited prayer to Our Lady and the pledges to the cross and flag. The response for roll call was your favorite spring flower. Secretary’s report was by Catherine Mauer and she had sent sympathy cards to Barb and Andy Root - Diane and Benson Bedel - Theresa and Jim Nobbe - and Elaine and Art Noble.
Rosemary Berhemeier gave treasurer’s report and reminded all to pray for those in need. It was decided to buy a new coffee pot. A get well card was signed by members present for Irene Wenning.
We were reminded to save quart jars and brown bags for the rummage sale which will be held on May 3, 4, and 5 in Parish Hall.
The hall is in need of a little cleaning before our church picnic on June 24.
The meeting closed with prayer. Delicious refreshments and prizes were furnished by Marlene Meyer and Melanie Barber.
The next meeting will be on May 10 and all ladies of parish are invited and welcome.
Delta Theta Tau
Members of the Alpha Alumna Chapter of Delta Theta Tau Sorority were hostess for a luncheon and social at the Mulligan Grille on April 14. Guests were members of the Beta Alumna and active chapters of Delta Theta Tau. The event was arranged by Willa Ford and Dorine Bruns.
Table centerpieces were potted peonies, and favors were made by Betty Meyer. Entertainment was provided by Pat Hicks, describing and playing the Harp.
Centerpieces were given as prizes to Rita Burkert, Frieda Meek, Virginia Howard, Anita Sontchi, Jan Bartels, Bev Stiers and Kim Self.
Chapter Welfare reported a get-well card sent to Mary Lou Buckley. There will be a bakeless sale at the May 7 meeting at the home of Kathryn Schoettmer.
