Winter Farmer's Market kicks off to record turnout

Greensburg — The Greensburg-Decatur County Winter Farmer’s Market officially kicked off Nov. 10, in the gymnasium of City Hall.

Market Coordinator and Executive Director of Mainstreet Greensburg Bryan Robbins characterized Saturday’s opening as the biggest in the Winter Market’s three-year existence.

“Compared to last year’s opening day,” he said, “we had 50 percent more vendors.”

Asked the primary differences between the recently concluded Fall Market and the Winter edition, Robbins said, “Winter market is much more focused on crafts compared to Fall and Summer markets. There’s obviously not as many vegetables that grow in winter.”

Robbins was quick to add, “We do have greens and other winter vegetables during winter market, and there’s no end of baked goods. And of course, there’s plenty of fresh meat — especially pork and beef — and fresh eggs. There’s also fresh honey and lots and lots of homemade candy, cookies and other sweets, as well as handmade jewelry and aprons. There’s a great deal of product diversity and variety; there’s truly something for everybody.”

Robbins views Winter Market’s growth in popularity as no coincidence.

“If you’re looking for a unique Christmas gift,” he said, “Winter Market is the place to find it. So much of what’s available is handmade or homemade; this is stuff you’re not going to find at a chain store. Plus, you’re supporting our town and community. Most of the money spent at an event like the Winter Market remains in the local economy. That’s a really big deal with the economy like it is right now; it’s vital to our community.”

Robbins further characterized Winter Market as an opportunity for families to spend quality time together in a fun, safe environment.

“Kids always love the sweets of course,” Robbins said. “But they also get to be part of the shopping process. This isn’t like shopping at a chain store, where kids are riding around in or hanging onto the cart, grabbing stuff from the shelves, asking mom or day for this or that.”

“At the Winter Market,” he continued, “kids get to talk to the people who grow the vegetables or bake the goodies or make the jewelry; they get to learn about growing and cooking and making crafts. It’s very 'hands on,' and kids really react positively to that and always have a great time.”  

The Winter Farmer’s Market will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, every second Saturday of the month from now through March, in the gymnasium of Greensburg’s City Hall.

“We hope everyone in Decatur County will mark their calendars,” Robbins added. “This is a great way for families to spend a chilly winter Saturday.”
