Iran To Further Enrich Uranium Stockpile

Iran formally told the U.N. nuclear agency on Monday that its researchers would begin significantly enriching the country's stockpile of uranium, a move sure to further anger Western nations who want the Islamic republic to halt its nuclear program.

Refining uranium produces nuclear fuel for a power plant but if carried out far enough can create material for a weapon.

Ali Asghar Soltanieh said Monday that Tehran would start enriching up to 20 percent from its present stock of lower enriched uranium. Iran has ignored five U.N. Security Council resolutions demanding that it freeze its enrichment program.
