Kiwanis Spell Bowl held at North Decatur High

Greensburg — The Greensburg Kiwanis Spell Bowl was held Thursday, Oct. 25 in the gym at North Decatur Junior Senior High School.

The annual event had thirteen elementary and junior high teams from city and county school districts, as well as St. Mary’s School, competing at four levels. Elementary teams from grades 4, 5 and 6 spelled the first 8 words of each round, while the junior high teams spelled an additional six words during a total of eight rounds.

Students at the elementary level were challenged from a list of 750 words, while the junior high students learned to spell the words from the elementary list plus an additional 1500 words from a second, more difficult list.

The places for the fourth grade level were first place: Greensburg Elementary, second place: St. Mary’s Elementary and third place: North Decatur Elementary.

The fifth grade: first place: Greensburg Elementary, second place: North Decatur Elementary and third place: St. Mary’s Elementary. Sixth graders were represented by North Decatur Elementary in first place, St. Mary’s Elementary in 2nd place and South Decatur Elementary in third place.

The junior high school students from North Decatur Jr. High School took first place, Greensburg Jr. High School in second place and South Decatur Jr. High School placed third.

Special recognition for spelling all words correctly for her round was given to Ellie Acra, a fifth Grader from Greensburg Elementary School.

The Greensburg Kiwanis Club appreciates all of the cooperation and effort given to the Spell Bowl by the students, parents, coaches and community members.

A special thanks goes to North Decatur Jr/Sr High for hosting the event, its Principal, Gary Cook, Denise Bates as moderator of the event, and Julie Herbert, who prepared the programs and certificates.
